Cognitive Assessments
(IQ Testing)
Cognitive assessment (also known as Intelligence Quotient or IQ testing) is an assessment designed to measure a child’s general thinking, reasoning abilities and intellectual functioning. Intelligence testing assesses various domains of a child’s cognitive capacity, such as working memory, verbal intelligence, and processing speed.
After an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test is completed, the results are assigned a score that serves as a proxy for a child’s intellectual abilities and potential. IQ testing is just one of many ways to evaluate someone's intelligence.
IQ tests are generally scored on a bell curve framework, with the top of the graph, usually denoted by a score of 100, representing average intelligence. Accordingly, about 50% of the population will achieve a score of 100.
It's important to note, when diagnosing an intellectual or other psychological disability, healthcare professionals often rely on additional tests and observations, in addition to an IQ test.
IQ test provide a useful, but not sole, measure of an individual's intellectual capability and should be interpreted with care.
