Psychological Assessments

Formal psychological assessments are typically required for a diagnosis, which is necessary when a child is starting school, applying for Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children (EIPIC), or special education funding. In such cases, a written assessment is usually required, and our child psychologists can assist you with that. Various assessments are available according to the age and needs of the child. Our child psychologists are trained and experienced in administering both cognitive and neurodevelopmental assessments

We utilise the most current assessment tools and use various modes of assessments (e.g., pen and paper, iPads, etc.) depending on each child’s preference and comfort level.

Cognitive assessments

Cognitive assessments (otherwise known as intelligence testing) aim to determine the child’s IQ as well as cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Intelligence testing assesses various domains of a child’s cognitive capacity, such as working memory, verbal intelligence, and processing speed.

Neurodevelopmental assessments

Neurodevelopmental assessment aims to determine the child’s skill set from behavioural and emotional regulation to social development. Infants and young children at risk for developing later mental health problems are now being assessed more frequently. This is the result of a growing recognition of the importance of early identification, intervention, and prevention.

As a follow up to the assessment results, our psychologists will work closely with those involved with the child to discuss the potential management plans catered to the child’s needs. Assessments are also usually part of a larger, more comprehensive assessment process involving a paediatrician or other specialists, such as an occupational therapist or speech therapist, and we work collaboratively to help guide or provide opinions on a diagnosis.
